Bubbles and Blah Blah featuring Coconutsy

Bubbles and Blah Blah!

Welcome to our new guest feature! We are so excited to introduce you to  businesses that really resonates with No Nasties Home and what we are all about.
We asked Justin Wood creator of  innovative and forward- thinking company Coconutsy, a few questions. What follows is sure to put a smile on the dial, so if you are intrigued, read on....

So, who is Coconutsy and what are you about?

Each year billions of coconut shells are burnt or thrown into landfill as a by-product from the coconut agriculture industry.

Coconutsy creates beautiful coconut bowls, cups and candles from these discarded coconut shells. We source all our products from sustainable and ethical sources with a mission to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

What is the funniest thing someone has done with your product?

We had a customer who made their own DIY coconut bowl bra for a fancy dress. Although it looked great we wouldn't recommend wearing this in the ocean for obvious reasons!

What’s the funniest fail you’ve had in business?

When we first started I accidentally ordered 500 coconut bowls that were raw on the outside. After a few quick purchases from Bunnings we sanded and polished each bowl by hand. It was really hard work, but it gave us a really good understanding on just how much work goes into each reclaimed bowl by Vietnamese and Balinese craftspeople.

Favourite cocktail and why?

Pina Colada in a Coconut Cup of course!

What is the word you love the most and why?

I get excited when I hear the word ‘Surf’.

What word do you hate and why?

‘Moist’ always gets a bad wrap - but I think ‘Phlegm’ is the winner here.

What did/do you want to be when you grow up?

Ever since high school I wanted to be a Graphic Artist from a young age. Luckily for me I made that happen with a career spanning almost 20 years.

Weird/fun fact about you?

I like the 1996 movie Independence Day… it’s my guilty pleasure!

What does the best day in your business look like?

The best part of this business is the creative aspect. From making smoothie bowl videos to launching eco products at Melbourne Fashion Week - there is a huge variety of creative projects that keep things interesting.

Where to next? What is the future of the brand in your eyes?

We are in the process of developing new products from wasted natural raw materials including the humble coconut shell. Creating products from waste not only keeps valuable materials out of landfill it also benefits the environment and helps our customers shop sustainably. That's a WIN, WIN, WIN!

3 reasons our readers should buy your product and why?

The products we create really do speak for themselves. They are created using a resource that would have otherwise gone to waste, they provide income for rural craftspeople in Vietnam and Bali and the end products promote a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

Plus with the support of our customers we have planted over 5,000 trees from Byron Bay to the Sunshine Coast over the last 3 years.

The income from these products has allowed us to build a small greenery in Maleny on the Sunshine Coast as a base to propagate and plant native trees and shrubs on cleared farmland.
